Viral Marketing
By Webzuniverse Dot Com
A viral marketing strategy encourages other people to spread the word about your website. This makes it an inexpensive, yet reliable, marketing option for a business reluctant to pay the high prices associated with online adverts.
Although the term "viral marketing" sounds as though it has something to do with a contagious disease, it's nothing more than a new Internet buzzword for "word of mouth". Also known to online marketers as "word of mouse", it's based on the familiar principle of encouraging people to spread your marketing message for you.
Viral marketing works famously on the Internet, which has made instant communication both easy and inexpensive. The obvious Internet medium to use is e-mail as it's hugely popular and allows messages to be forwarded easily to another person. The digital format of these messages also makes them simple to copy.
Advantages of viral marketing strategies:
They can work very well since you're taking advantage of other peoples' existing networks of relatives and friends.
If people receive a message from a friend rather than a stranger, they're more likely to read it, treat it seriously and respond to it.
They're inexpensive to set up.
Once set up, they can go on and on working without costing you any extra money.
Some examples of effective viral marketing strategies include:
Giving visitors the option to "recommend this website" by e-mail.
Offering virtual postcards, interesting articles, humorous or creative messages, or other items on your website that are easy to transfer and replicate.
Featuring a valuable incentive in your e-mails that readers will want to let their friends know about - like competitions, free services or discount vouchers.
Simply encouraging people to forward your e-mail newsletter to friends.
To make the most of these strategies, each of the e-mails should feature your marketing message. It's better to keep it short and simple so it can be transmitted easily and won't, for example, be cut off.
If the message is compelling, it can work well to persuade the recipients to send it on, contact you or bring them to your site. You need to include your URL (website address) though, if you want people to drop by at the site.
When considering viral marketing, something to bear in mind is that news of poor service spreads even faster than the positive communication you support. So, before you even think about implementing a viral marketing strategy, you should make sure that you're able to answer e-mails quickly and provide great customer service.
